NEET PG Admission 2027: Rank-Based Merit System Proposed, Check Major Changes

A 12-member expert committee has recommended replacing the percentile-based qualifying system with rank-based admissions for NEET PG and NEET SS.

The recommendations were presented before the Supreme Court on November 3, 2026, as part of efforts to reform postgraduate medical admissions.

The committee has advised against reducing qualifying cut-offs simply to fill vacant postgraduate medical seats.

It has also recommended lower fees for non-clinical PG courses to make these programmes more accessible to medical graduates.

Another key proposal is to exempt students pursuing pre-clinical and para-clinical courses from mandatory service bonds.

The debate intensified after NEET PG cut-offs were repeatedly reduced in previous admission cycles, including the 2023 and 2024 counselling rounds.

In January 2026, NBEMS reportedly reduced the qualifying percentile for General candidates to 7 and for SC, ST and OBC candidates to zero during the third counselling round.

The Supreme Court raised concerns about repeated cut-off reductions and their possible impact on the quality of postgraduate medical education.

The proposed reforms aim for a more transparent and merit-based admission system by 2027, subject to further Supreme Court proceedings and final regulations.

Note: These are committee recommendations, not confirmed admission rules. Final implementation depends on further Supreme Court proceedings and official regulations.
