National Mathematics Day; All about Ramanujan

National Mathematics Day is observed on December 22 every year

Birth anniversary of India’s mathematical genius Srinivasa Ramanujan.

This was announced by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on 26 February 2012 at Madras University

Ramanujan, a mathematical genius, was able to solve algebra and trigonometric problems that his fellow mates found difficult to crack.

Srinivasa Ramanujan Aiyangar was born on 22 December 1887 He was known as ‘The Man who knew infinity’ because of his infinite love and passion as well as contributions made to Mathematics.

During his short life, Ramanujan independently compiled nearly 3,900 results (mostly identities and equations).

The first Indian to be elected a fellow at Trinity College, Cambridge University.

His work and research opened new arenas of mathematical research.

In 1917, Ramanujan was elected to the London Mathematical Society
