Government Scholarship Rules 2026-27 Revised: Key Changes Students Must Know

The National Scholarship Portal (NSP) has introduced revised scholarship rules for the 2026-27 academic year, changing how multiple scholarship applications are handled.

Merit + Welfare Scholarships: Students receiving a welfare-based scholarship should not be denied a merit-based scholarship if they subsequently become eligible, and vice versa.

Two Broad Categories: Government scholarships will be classified as Merit-based or Welfare-based to improve clarity and avoid duplication.

Merit-Based Scholarships: These recognise academic performance, rankings or achievements. Examples include NMMSS, Central Sector Scholarship and INSPIRE.

Welfare-Based Scholarships: These provide financial support to eligible communities and socio-economic groups, including various SC, ST, OBC and minority scholarships.

Application Process Changes: Information entered during the first application will be retained for later applications. Students will mainly need to add scheme-specific details and documents.

If an Application Is Defective: Students can modify scheme-specific information. To change general, academic, institute or course details, they must first withdraw submitted applications.

Verification Changes: L1 and L2 officers will be able to view an applicant’s multiple scholarship applications and their statuses, helping coordinate verification across schemes.

Important for 2026-27: General or academic deficiencies can trigger a “Red Flag” on other applications. Students and parents should carefully check their details before submission.
