8.23 Lakh Government Jobs Vacant: RTI Reveals Massive Workforce Gap in Central Government
Against 39.23 lakh sanctioned posts, only 30.99 lakh employees were in position as of March 1, 2024.
The vacancies represent around 21% of the sanctioned civilian workforce covered by the government data.
Railways had the largest vacancy count, with 2.40 lakh posts vacant out of 14.79 lakh sanctioned positions.
Defence civilian establishments had 2.42 lakh vacancies against 5.56 lakh sanctioned posts.
Railways and defence civilian establishments together account for more than 4.82 lakh vacant posts.
The Ministry of Home Affairs reported 1.10 lakh vacancies against 11.18 lakh sanctioned positions.
Together, defence, railways and home affairs account for nearly three-fourths of the total vacancies.
The Department of Posts had 61,546 vacancies, while the Department of Revenue had 69,662 vacant posts.
Several departments also recorded major shortages, including labour, environment, education and health administration.
Scientific establishments were affected too, with vacancies reported in atomic energy, space and electronics departments.
The RTI findings highlight a massive recruitment gap and could offer significant opportunities for government job aspirants.
