National Engineer’s Day 2026: September 15 Marks the Birth Anniversary of Sir M. Visvesvaraya
Born in 1861, Visvesvaraya is widely remembered as the Father of Modern Indian Engineering and a great nation-builder.
After the devastating 1908 Musi floods, he helped develop systematic flood-control measures for Hyderabad.
His water-management work included reservoirs, irrigation systems and innovative automatic sluice gates for efficient water regulation.
As Chief Engineer of Mysore, he was closely associated with the Krishna Raja Sagara Dam and irrigation development.
He also promoted industrialisation and development through his books, including Planned Economy for India and Reconstructing India.
Awarded the Bharat Ratna in 1955, Visvesvaraya’s legacy continues to inspire engineers and India’s development journey.
