Jobs in Japan for Indians 2026: Skills, Language Tests & Visa Guide

Japan offers employment opportunities for skilled Indian workers in sectors facing labour shortages, including manufacturing, construction and hospitality.

The Specified Skilled Worker (SSW) programme provides eligible foreign workers with a route to employment in approved Japanese industries.

SSW job fields include nursing care, agriculture, food services, industrial manufacturing, automobile maintenance, construction and accommodation.

The SSW programme has two categories: SSW (i), generally limited to five years, and SSW (ii), designed for workers with advanced skills in eligible fields.

Most SSW (i) applicants must pass the JFT-Basic or JLPT N4 Japanese language test, alongside the required occupation-specific skills examination.

Certain jobs, including some transport-related roles, may require higher Japanese proficiency, while nursing-care applicants face additional language assessments.

To find a job, choose a suitable occupation, prepare for the required tests, verify a legitimate employer and review the employment contract carefully.

Before accepting an offer, compare salary with taxes, rent, food, transport and other deductions; SSW (i) generally does not allow family members to accompany workers under that status.

Check Japan’s official Specified Skilled Worker website for current eligibility, examinations and visa requirements, and avoid agents promising guaranteed jobs or visas.
