IELTS 2026: What Is IELTS, Who Can Apply? Exam Pattern, Band Scores & Fees
IELTS stands for International English Language Testing System and assesses English-language proficiency for study, work and migration.
IELTS has two versions: Academic for higher education and General Training for work, migration and other purposes.
The IELTS exam has four sections: Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking, covering key English communication skills.
Listening lasts about 30 minutes, while Reading takes 60 minutes and includes 40 questions.
The Writing section lasts 60 minutes and includes two tasks, while Speaking takes around 11–14 minutes.
IELTS scores range from Band 0 to 9, with Band 9 representing an expert user of English.
Band 8 is classified as very good, Band 7 as good, Band 6 as competent and Band 5 as modest proficiency.
In India, IELTS fees are approximately ₹17,000–₹18,000, although fees can vary by test type and location.
IELTS scores are accepted by institutions and organisations in more than 140 countries, including the UK, US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.
